Schizophrenia is a disorder that affects or alters a person’s ability to think, feel and behave clearly.
The exact cause of schizophrenia is still unknown, but a combination of genetics, environment and altered brain chemistry and structure may play a role. This disorder affects less than 1% of the US population.
Schizophrenia is characterized by thoughts and/or experiences that seem out of touch with reality, disorganized behavior and decreased participation in daily activities. Difficulty with concentration and difficulty in processing memories may also occur.
With treatment, symptoms of schizophrenia will substantially improve and the likelihood of a reappearance can be reduced.
