This disorder is identified by failure to move past or recover after experiencing or witnessing a terrifying event. It is a psychiatric disorder that may occur in people who have witnessed a traumatic event such as a natural disaster, a serious accident, war, rape or who have been threatened with death, sexual violence or serious injury.
The condition may last months or years in some cases, with triggers that can bring back vivid memories of the trauma accompanied by intense emotional and physical reactions.
Symptoms may include nightmares or flashbacks, avoidance of situations that bring back the trauma, heightened reactivity to stimuli, anxiety or depressed mood.
